The Fifth Third Bank allegedly told a Black woman from Detroit that a $12,200 gambling winnings check was “fraudulent” and could not be deposited. Since then, she has sued the bank for racial discrimination. Fifth Third, on the other hand, argues that everything was a miscommunication and is requesting that the case be dropped.

Lizzie Pugh, 71, allegedly made a trip with her church on April 9 to the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant.
While there, the retired school employee hit the slot machine jackpot. She decided to pay taxes on her winnings from gaming. The staff handed her many tiny cash and wrote her a check.
She opened an account on April 11 at a Fifth Third facility in Livonia, Michigan, so she could deposit the check. She claims nonetheless that three different staff members told her it was all a joke. The bank employees refused to allow her open an account and didn’t give her her cheque back.
Check Your Privilege
According to Pugh, “I honestly couldn’t believe they did that to me.” “I was in shock. How do you know the check is fake, I kept asking. They simply insisted it was bogus. I was simply petrified.
Pugh eventually received the cheque back after threatening to contact the police. Under Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, which forbids racial discrimination in public places, she filed a lawsuit against the bank. In her complaint, Fifth Third is being sued for an undefined sum of money in damages.
But in a move to dismiss the lawsuit filed on Wednesday, Fifth Third’s attorneys refuted every charge. They contend that the branch just tried to contact the casino to confirm the check as part of its anti-fraud procedures. Records of a phone call made by the bank to the casino on the disputed afternoon are cited.
Fifth Third spokesperson Ed Lloyd said on Wednesday that based on his company’s examination of the charges, “we believe our employees’ actions were well-intentioned and have been misconstrued.”
“Bunch of Bullsh*t”
Deborah Gordon, Pugh’s attorney, however, told the DFP that was “a lot of bull****.” She asserts that the bank mistreated her client because she is Black.
She had to quit and go somewhere else because they wouldn’t do business with her,” Gordon added. “Why couldn’t they get her a bank account? They obviously suspected fraud and were unwilling to do business with her.
“Why do you inform someone that a cheque is fake? I really doubt they would inform me that it is fake if I stepped in there,” commented Gordon, a white man.
Gordon claimed that once Pugh had her check back, she brought it to Chase across the street, where it was immediately accepted.
