Two store employees in Massachusetts have been charged with conspiring to steal a $3 million lottery ticket from a guy who wasn’t aware he had won.

A Plymouth County Grand Jury this week indicted Carly Nunes, 23, of Lakeville, Massachusetts, on charges of theft, making a false claim, and intimidating witnesses, according to a statement from the district attorney’s office.

Winning a substantial sum in a lottery draw didn’t result in a fairytale ending for a man from Kerala, India. During a celebration of his newfound wealth, amounting to INR8 million (about US$97,000), the 35-year-old fell from a terrace. He later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital, and police believe it may have been more than a simple accident.

The man, only identified as Sajeev by local media outlet On Manorama, hit the lottery last month when his numbers landed in the Kerala State Lottery. US$100,000 is a lot of money anywhere. A British woman is anxiously awaiting a judge’s decision on whether she won £10 (US$12.30) or £1 million (US$1.2 million) on an online lottery scratch-off game.

Joan Parker-Grennan, from Boston, Lincolnshire, sued UK National Lottery provider Camelot in London’s High Court in April last year.
