A Hearne, Texas woman who claimed a $5 million lottery scratch-off ticket prize earlier this month has now been arrested on suspicion of theft and fraud, authorities said.
Arthurica Jackson claimed the jackpot anonymously from a $50 “Luxe” scratch-off game on November 5, according to the Texas Lottery website. But Hearne police and state lottery officials said a subsequent investigation revealed that Jackson may have obtained the winnings fraudulently.
The investigation led to her arrest last week on charges including lottery fraud exceeding $10k and theft of property exceeding $300k. Jackson was carted off the Robertson County Jail.
Hearne police have revealed few details about the investigation, but multiple sources who spoke to local CBS affiliate KBTX said Jackson was an employee of the QuickPump store in Hearne. This was the outlet where the ticket was sold, according to the Texas Lottery website.
While it’s still unclear what happened in Jackson’s case, it’s not unheard of for store clerks to swindle their customers out of winning tickets.
That’s especially true if a customer asks the clerk to check a ticket for wins without scratching off the symbols.
If you simply scratch off the front bar code, the store’s computer system can instantly tell if it’s a winner. This creates an opportunity for a dishonest clerk to declare the ticket a loser and pocket it for themselves.
A Robertson County justice of the peace set the bond for Jackson at $150K for each charge, totaling $300K. Prosecutors had recommended bonds of $1.5 million for each charge, totaling $3 million, but this was considered too high.
Jackson has paid the bond and awaits a court hearing.
In a case from Tennessee, officials became suspicious when Meet Patel, a gas station attendant in Rutherford County, turned up at the lottery headquarters in Nashville to claim a $1 million prize.
When Patel couldn’t provide officials with some required information, including proper identification and bank information, they became suspicious and checked the store’s security video from the day the ticket was sold, where they saw a customer buy two $20 scratch-off tickets and ask Patel to check them.
Both were winners, but Patel returned just one winning ticket with a jackpot of $40 to the customer and threw the million-dollar winner into the trash, according to prosecutors. Later, the video shows Patel fish out the ticket and put it in his pocket, authorities said.

This is because such prizes are collected instantly instead of the standard annuity option valid in case the winner wants to collect the whole jackpot.
Monday’s Powerball drawing saw winning numbers 1, 25, 57, 62 and 64, along with the red Powerball number 15 drawn. While nobody matched all the winning numbers for the jackpot, two lucky players won million-dollar prizes. One of the players who matched five white balls was from Florida, while the other one was from Texas. Each of the winners won $1 million, while nobody matched five winning numbers together with the Power Play option which would’ve awarded $2 million.
More than a dozen other players won a tier-three prize. Five Powerball players who matched four white balls along with the red Powerball and paid for the Power Play option secured a $100,000 prize each. Another 11 players won the standard $50,000 prize. A total of 864 lottery players won $100 each, while 255 took home a $200 Power Play prize each.
As is usual, the largest number of players won the lowest prize. More than 373,000 players won $4 each. Moreover, close to 114,400 Powerball players won an $8 Power Play prize each.
With the jackpot surviving another drawing, more lottery aficionados and seasoned gamblers are likely to try their luck. Still, the question remains whether or not the grand prize will continue to increase and reach $1 billion, or the very next drawing might be the one that resets the jackpot to its $20 million starting value.

The Powerball jackpot continues to swell after yet another unsuccessful drawing. While no one claimed the big jackpot, however, two players scooped up significant prizes.
The September 21 drawing was largely unremarkable, resulting in no jackpot win. With some $197 million on the line, potential winners would have been in for a huge payday. The cash value of the jackpot, meanwhile, stood at $99 million, promising to change the life of anyone lucky enough to match all six numbers.
The winning white numbers, for reference, were 17, 19, 21, 37 and 45. The red Powerball stood at 14.
While no one succeeded in grabbing the Grand Prize, two American players won big, securing seven-figure prizes after matching all five white numbers. The players in question narrowly missed the jackpot but still earned huge sums of money.
One of them, from North Carolina, grabbed $1 million for matching the five white numbers. The other winning ticket was sold in Florida and secured $2 million instead since its player had the Power Play option active.
Power Play, for context, is an optional feature that multiplies players’ wins for a small additional sum. Power Play costs $1 and could multiply winnings by up to x10, depending on the size of the win.
As no one won the big prize, it will now carry on to the next drawing. Set to take place in some 12 hours from the time of this writing, the September 23 drawing will provide players with a shot at an even bigger jackpot.
The jackpot is currently standing at $208 million, according to official estimates, with a cash value of $104.6 million.
The previous Powerball jackpot was won fairly quickly by a player from California. The size of the jackpot at the time was $44.3 million. This win came just several days after a player from Pennsylvania secured the previous $213.8 million jackpot.
