US Sen. Jacky Rosen, D, was called the winner on Friday night in the close race in Nevada against Sam Brown.

News of her victory was projected by the Associated Press at 9:15 p.m. PT. Other news organizations had declared her the winner earlier this week.

She was leading Brown, R, by 20,571 votes, according to news reports. That’s a difference of approximately 1.4%.

Naming her the winner came after Clark County processed late mail-in ballots, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS.

To be counted in the race, mail-in ballots needed to be postmarked by Election Day, which was Tuesday.

Second Term for Rosen

This marks the second Senate term for Rosen. She initially was elected in 2018.

Previously, she was elected to House of Representatives in 2016.

Brown, a former Army officer, was endorsed by President-elect Donald Trump.

Initially Too Close To Call

The Rosen vs. Brown race was considered a toss-up by pollsters and then was too close to call after the polls closed on Tuesday.

As of Thursday, Rosen led Brown by 12,699 votes, based on numbers reported by the AP.

Rosen was leading then with 47.6% of the votes, which totaled 644,471, as of Thursday morning. Brown had 46.7% of the votes totaling 631,772.

Rosen was projected on Thursday to have won against Brown by Decision Desk HQ, The Hill reported. But other news organizations were hesitant to call the race given the number of ballots that had yet to be counted.

Many votes cast in Nevada still have questionable signatures. Voters have until Tuesday to verify their signatures on these ballots. As of Wednesday, 12,736 mail-in ballots had problematic signatures.

In some of Tuesday’s Senate races, the Republican candidates benefited from the historic victory seen by former President Donald Trump (R) over Vice President Kamala Harris (D) on Election Day.

Republicans had hoped Brown would capture the Senate seat, to boost the Republican majority in the Senate. The Republicans now have 53 seats in the Senate, while the Democrats have 46. The Arizona Senate seat has yet to be called.

In Arizona, Kari Lake, R, still trailed Ruben Gallego, D, on Friday in the close Senate race. As of Friday night, Lake trailed Gallego by 1.1% with a 32,779-vote difference, according to AZMirror, a regional news site.

A husband and wife from Spain who schemed to swindle a lottery winner out of more than €11 million (US$12 million) have been handed a three-year prison sentence by a judge in Valencia.

The couple, who haven’t been identified by Spanish media other than by the detail that they own a bar in Pedralba, a small town near Valencia, were also ordered to pay the misappropriated funds to the victim in restitution.

The victim, also unnamed, was a regular at the couple’s bar, which was where she purchased her weekly lottery tickets. On March 12, 2017, she bought three tickets for Spain’s Lotería Nacional Father’s Day draw and handed them back to the bar owners for safekeeping, a common practice among the regulars.

Quirky System

The victim would always buy three tickets, two of which would have the same number each week. 10,123 and 12,396. The third would always be a random number.

This week she chose 39,813, which happened to be the same number picked on a joint ticket by the bar owners and one of their friends. In addition, the same number was chosen by another regular at the bar, who also entrusted their ticket to the owners.

To win the big jackpot (el gordo), players need to match their ticket number and the series number with the balls drawn. Tickets that match the winning number but fail to match the series (bonus) number win smaller prizes.

Coerced into Split

The draw took place on March 18, 2017, and 39,813 was a winner for all four players at the bar. However, only the victim’s ticket had the right series number for the €14.8 million (US$16 million) jackpot. The other two tickets won €130K each.

The couple called the victim and asked her to come to the bar. When she arrived, they locked the door so no one else could enter and showed her the three winning tickets, according to court filings.

Although they realized she had won the jackpot, they claimed the tickets had been mixed up, and it was impossible to know who the real winner was.

The couple had a lawyer draw up a formal agreement outlining the four-way distribution of the prizes, which was signed by the victim.

After convicting the couple of fraud, the judge ruled the victim had been “led to believe that she did not know which ticket was the winner” and was entitled to the full prize.

Lawyers for the victim criticized the length of the case, which lasted six years, as “remarkably excessive” considering its “low complexity.”

At about 4:30 a.m. on September 14, the Morris County New Jersey woman bet $20 on an Aristocrat Gaming Dollar Storm slot machine while at the Boardwalk gaming property.

A man visiting Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Resort & Casino won $1,620,470 on September 5.

Identified as Scott of Omaha, Nebraska, he was playing Pai Gow Poker when he got a seven-card straight flush with a joker, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

He was playing the game for some 90 minutes before getting the win via a progressive jackpot.

He immediately called his wife to share the good news. He will invest the jackpot.

Scott was at the casino that night dressed in a shirt featuring the number of Kansas City Chiefs player Patrick Mahomes.

The winner stopped off at the casino to try his luck before watching the game between the Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens. The Chiefs won that game by a score of 27 to 20.

The winner is a Caesars Rewards member.

One very lucky man, Agostino Limongelli, recently won $1M from the FanDuel Casino in its summer sweepstakes promotion.

One suspect in a robbery scheme that targeted two elderly casino winners last February was recently arrested while his alleged accomplices remain free after they reportedly stole a bag containing steak and lobster rather than the $130K in cash the couple won at an Illinois gaming property.

The victims were targeted at the Rivers Casino Des Plaines and followed to their Fox Lake, Ill. residence on February 10.

But the suspects failed to look inside the bag. The female victim had placed the cash in her walker while the bag stolen by the robbers contained leftover food.

Police were alerted and after finding out the license plate number on the get-away vehicle, identified the two suspects.

Michael Britton, 27, of Chicago, was arrested on August 28. He was charged with armed robbery, aggravated robbery, and robbery of a victim over 60, according to the Fox Lake Police Department.

The defendants made off with her leftover steak and lobster as opposed to the $130,000,” Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Theis was quoted this week by the Scanner.

When Britton appeared in court recently, Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak said about the victims, “I guess in their own way, [they] outsmarted the bad guys.”

The second suspect, Aramie Kent of Maywood, Ill. is still being sought. A judge signed a warrant for his arrest. A third suspect spoke to the couple at the casino and was part of the robbery scheme, police said. She also is on the lam.

Atlantic City Casino Attack Leads to Arrests

An assault at the Tropicana Atlantic City led to a woman falling unconscious and a man being threatened by a knife on Sunday.

The female victim was kicked and punched in the head during the struggle. There’s no update on her current medical condition.

The incident began in the Quarter, a portion of the casino with restaurants and retail stores.

It wasn’t immediately known what led to the fight. It’s also unclear if others involved will be charged, according to the Daily Voice.

A man and woman were apprehended recently for last month’s holdup scheme of an unsuspecting winner at the Muckleshoot Casino Resort.

The would-be victim won $1K at the Auburn, Wash. gaming property on August 30. He took the payout in cash and stuffed the money into his wallet.

At about 3:16 a.m., he was walking back to his vehicle that was left in a parking garage. when he was approached by a woman who started to flirt with him.

Suddenly, a man appeared and pulled out a tire iron, ordering the victim to hand over his wallet, according to the Auburn Reporter.

Responding quickly, the victim was able to reach a hammer that was inside his nearby truck.

As the confrontation escalated, the male suspect dropped the tire iron and pulled out a knife. The victim, sensing danger, turned over his wallet.

The two suspects quickly fled in a car. The victim wasn’t injured.

The couple had tailed the man on the gaming floor after he won the money and the woman’s flirting appeared to be part of the robbery scheme.

Earlier this month, officers charged the suspects, Tahiri C. Ponce, 31, of Winlock, Wash., and Arturo Alejandro Perez-Nava, 32, of Elma, Wash., with first-degree robbery.

They were arrested at Tacoma, Washington’s Emerald Queen Casino on September 6. It wasn’t clear if they were planning a similar scheme at that casino.

Both remained in custody as of earlier this week. Bail for Ponce was set at $25K. Perez-Nava’s bail was set at $250K. Ponce has confessed to her role in the Muckleshoot casino robbery, police said.

The casino is located about 30 miles south of Seattle.

Prior Charges

A records check by local police revealed that Ponce recently was convicted of burglary and theft, and is facing a pending assault case. Perez-Nava has a pending burglary and theft case, a report from Washington TV station KIRO added.

Those convictions and potential convictions could lead to more time in prison for both of the defendants.
